2019 Holiday Concert Fundraiser

WINTER A CAPELLA CONCERT (2).png

We’ve teamed up with Capital Blend, Strictly Vocals, and Word of Mouth to present a fundraiser concert for Food and Friends.

Here is our portion of the program:

  • Sing Out, March On - Joshuah Campbell (arr. Noel León)
While the musical style and the lyrics are a nod to the protest songs of the civil rights era, Joshuah conceived of the song during the 2015 demonstrations for Black Lives Matter. The fact that the lyrics can remind us simultaneously of 64 years ago, 4 years ago, and even 4 days ago, serves as a heavy reminder that the song's call to action still rings true.

  • Rise Up - Andra Day, Lin-Manuel Miranda (arr. Ricky Jabarin)
Rising up means different things to people: resilience… resistance... revolution… Whatever your interpretation is, we hope that above all, this song infuses you with hope, faith, and energy to carry you through the season and those to come.

  • Reclaiming My Time - Mykal Kilgore (arr. Noel León)
This song was created after a notorious congressional hearing during which Congresswoman Maxine Waters boldly stood up for her right to speak while continuously being interrupted. This form of suppression is something that happens all too frequently to both women and people of color.

  • (I Can't Keep) Quiet - MILCK (edited by Noel León)
This next piece, called "Quiet," has inspired the formation of choirs all around the world. It all started with the #ICantKeepQuiet Choir, which was organized and led by an artist named MILCK. During the 2017 DC Women’s March, these singers from around the country gathered and performed this powerful anthem written by MILCK and Adrianne Gonzalez.

  • Brave & Roar mashup – Sara Bareilles, Katy Perry (arr. Katie Thatcher)
Brave” by Sara Bareilles is an empowerment song for the LBGTQ community, written for a friend who was fearful of coming out. “Roar” by Katy Perry shares a similar theme of self-empowerment and claiming agency over yourself.

  • Living Planet - Emma’s Revolution
Living Planet is musically one of our simplest songs, but emotionally one of the most contemplative and nuanced. It serves as a gentle but fervent resolution to protect our planet and uplift its inhabitants. It's also an insightful reminder of the sustaining power of unity and hope.

  • We Are The Ones - Sweet Honey in the Rock (arr. Jeanné Lewis and Mackenzie Howard)
This song was adapted from a poem called “Poem for South African Women” by June Jordan. The poem commemorates a group of women with profound inner strength who, in 1956, marched on the government in South Africa to protest the Apartheid regime.

  • I’m Gonna Walk It With You - Brian Claflin and Ellie Grace (arr. Rebecca Blum)
This song was written by singer-songwriters Brian Claflin and Ellie Grace as an “anthem of solidarity for a new era.” We sing it as a message of solidarity for all sorts of audiences, from marginalized communities experiencing injustices to close friends going through a rough time.
