FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATIONWIDE SINGING OF BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM ORGANIZED FOR JUNETEENTH

Washington, DC -- June 15, 2020 --  Black people and supporters are in the streets of the United States calling for an end to police violence against Black bodies and an end to over 400 years of systemic racism. In an act of solidarity, singers and musicians across the globe will join together to lift every voice and sing against white supremacy.

On June 19, 2020, musical social justice organizers are encouraging musicians across the country and around the world to sing or play “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” known as the Black National Anthem, at 6 p.m. ET wherever they are. The goal of the organizers is to have at least one musician performing the song in every U.S. state and on each continent.

“The future of the nation hinges on every action we take today to stop the horrific cycle of subjugation and dehumanization perpetuated by systemic racism. Juneteenth Solidarity Sing is an opportunity galvanize people across the nation and send a message to the world that we will no longer stand by while Black people are willfully murdered by police in this country,” said Nikki Nesbary, the event organizer and chair of SongRise, a women’s social justice a cappella group based in Washington, DC.

Participants should visit the Facebook event for a toolkit, including sheet music and detailed instructions on how to participate.
